Shocktober 2024: The Phantom of Mar-a-Lago (Vic Berger IV, 2024)

Just in time for spooky season — not to mention the US presidential election — Vic Berger is back, doing what he does better than anyone: skewering Donald Trump and the whole MAGA Extended Universe using found footage from cable news, YouTube and social media. The result: the very fair and balanced editing tour-de-force The Phantom of Mar-a-Lago.

In this half-hour long opus, which opens in the aftermath of the 2020 election, Berger hones in on Trump’s Florida residence. Mar-a-Lago is, in addition to a home, also possibly the world’s tackiest country club, and the many bizarre things that happen there, and the many weirdos who populate it, is endlessly fascinating — in the same way that a car crash or the removal of a pus-filled cyst is fascinating. It’s a horror show.

Always interested in what goes on in the margins and behind the curtain, Berger zooms in on the grifters, the true believers, the freaks, the entertainers. He goes deep on Trump’s obsession with The Phantom of the Opera, shows the Don aggressively swarmed by phone-wielding cultists, and captures the dull decadence of everything that goes on in that bloated place. It’s all very entertaining, and very scary. The Phantom of Mar-a-Lago is available on YouTube. Dr. Runtime approved (27 mins).
